Distressed surfaces within urban city environments and the stories they communicate have been a huge fascination for Oakland based artist, Isaac Saavedra. Finding a way to isolate movement and energy in abstraction is key to the work he creates. Primarily working on wood panel, Saavedra has been able to take these themes and make large, colorful and abstract paintings through the use of acrylic, oil, wax, stencils, and spray paint.
Integral to his process is the passage of time and taking influence from various cityscapes and observed street scenes around him. Saavedra’s paintings isolate the movements of the mediums he uses, and by doing so, new sequences are produced. These reveal an inseparable relationship between motion and matter. In a search for new methods to ‘read the city’, he generates intense personal moments masterfully created by means of rules and omissions, acceptance and refusal. He is constantly challenged and intrigued by these processes that continue to lead him to his next body of work.
